I noticed Mech didn't have a Summoning Skill under the skills blogpost- so imma gonna formulate one. Very Happy

Summoning - The Skill

Summoning is an interesting skill that allows you to bind and use familiars to you- it is classified into 3 subsections- Summoning, Animal Training, and Misc.

Part One: Animal Training

Animal training is the act of capturing a wild beast, taming it, and binding it to you as a familiar.

To start, you must obtain Hunter's Tools, a cage, and a Pen in your house. You must first find the animal you want to tame. Lower level summoners might want to stick to things like rabbits and cows, while higher level players might even convince a dragon to fight for them! (note that only very very young dragons can be tamed- older dragons are much wiser and cannot be tamed- the only way to tame one is to obtain an egg).

After finding your chosen prey, you must Lure it using your Hunter's Tools. Some animals, such as those you hatch from eggs, do not have to be lured- but obtaining the egg is a different matter entirely.

You must Lure it into the cage which can be concealed to make it easier- you can hide it in a bush while in a forest for example. If you can successfully make the creature enter the cage, (which also is dependant on if it can see you) you will catch the creature, and can pick up the cage and take it to your House.

After arriving in your house, you will have an either, very, very frightened, or very, very angry animal. Here comes the Taming part. You must alter the creature's behavior to like you- you can start doing this by feeding it. This will lower the creature's Hunger level and increase it's happiness level- as well as reducing it's Fear and Anger levels. After the animal is calmed down, you may attempt to stroke it- stroking it will have one of two effects- you will successfully stroke it, which will bind the animal to you as a pet, or it will bite you, which will deal some damage. In the case of certain beasts though, (such as certain wolves) "other" things might happen to you.

After the animal becomes a pet, you can let it out of it's cage, where it will roam around your house. You can set areas for it to stay out of, or even a patrol path if you want roaming sentries to keep out theives. You can also name it!

However, if you want it to be able to follow you around the world, you must obtain a Binding Stone. These can be dropped from monsters or Crafted from certain types of rock. You then must use your Crafting and Smithing skills to make a Collar, (higher level creatures need better collars) which when placed on the pet, (this needs a higher level of happiness) will bind the pet to you and allow you to Summon it from anywhere- when not summoned, it will roam around your house.

When helping you in skills and in combat, your Familiar will gain XP in various skills. Familiars are restricted to certain skills though- rabbits can only Gather things, while your average wolf can only fight- while some high level familiars can do many things- bears can Fish and fight for example, while pet Dragons can help you in nearly every skill, and carry on an intellegent conversation!

Part Two: Summoning

Now, the actual act of summoning is much different. Instead of binding a familiar to you, you are simply summoning it from wherever. To Summon, you must have- a Summoning Orb of a type suitable to your level, a Scrying Glass, Essences, and possibly other reagents.

First off, the Summoning Orb.

Made from Glass and Metals, the Orbs are used for various things. Orbs made from elemental metals and whatnot are used for more powerful elemental familiars. You must always have an Orb whenever you summong- it's your most important tool.

Your second most important tool is the Scrying Glass. Without one of these, you can't use the orb!

Next, you have Essences, the raw magic essence that allows you to summon things. There are many kinds of essences, and they are extracted from various things- Death Essence from zombies, or Nature Essence from Trees, for example. Each essence type has 5 stages of power, ranging from Tiny, Small, Medium, Large, and Huge.

Finnally, some creatures require other things, such as a suit of armor to take possession of.

To start, take your scrying glass, orb, and Essences to where you want to summon.

You must Scry into the orb to find the summon you wish to summon, and pick the number of essences you want to put in. Other Reagents are used automatically, and if you chose a right combonation, you get... a summon! You can then use this summon for the ONE task or skill it's designed for- mining, fighting, fishing, gathering, fighting, dragon petting, fighting.... well, yeah.. this is more revolved around fighting than Animal Taming is.

Summoning vs Animal Training

Summoning requires inventory spaces- Animal Training requires nothing.

It's easy to get a familiar with summoning- it takes time to tame and train a familiar to a reasonable level with Animal Training.

You can only name familiars that you tame yourself.

There is no risk involved with summoning- while Taming, you may get bitten, which could have very, very, very, very, VERY bad side effects...

Summons are limited- they only last for a short amount of time, and if they die, you can't summon again for 3 minutes. With Animal Training, your pet can stay for as long as you can feed them- if they die, they can be ressurected at the cost of some Happiness.

You don't get that warm fuzzy feeling of a dragon sleeping in your lap with summons- they are just mindless beings.

Part 3: Misc Uses

Summoning can also be used to summon your friends from around the map. With higher summoning level, you can summon from farther away.

This, however, can have... adverse side effects though. Use with caution.

There are also other things that summoning effects, but you must find them out for yourself!

And now that I have written this.. time to work on a story! Very Happy

I like the idea, but to become successful when developing this game, we must refrain from copying other game's material for the most part.  I like the skill summoning, but it is too complicated as it is right now.  Also, Mech's blogspot has about 20+ skills right now.  We don't need to add more.

Thanks,
Developer

I hope you don't get off to a bad start with me.  With RS coming out with it, I assume that it is a copy.  I have a great reason to.  Theory is original and I like it.

Well, no.

Sure, RS coming out with summoning was my inspiration for thinking this up, but the actual skill's basis is made of what I wanted summoning to be like in RS- obviously summoning didn't turn out how I planned, so I am resorting to TOTEO to relay my suggestion.

Good idea.  I like how your enthusiasm enspires.  Of course RS's mistakes is what TOTEO will be  Razz .

You and I think alike, my friend. The design of Naelor was actully based off of RS- it was going to be a platformer, in fact.

RS's failure in the past few months is what made me hop on the train.  In fact, I want this to be better.

Summoning is a definite no.

I'm currently brainstorming ideas for a possible new skill that would work similarly to your idea, though. Spelunking through caves and jungles to find different specimens might just be more useful that you think...
